Sade

Imani left around midnight to catch a flight to Jamaica, and Sade could not have been happier when she left. The whole time she was there, she complained about her kids, tried to brainstorm ways to make more money, expressed fear of being unable to clean the drug dealers’ money, or tried to figure out the process for getting Dante declared legally dead. When Sade made it home, she desperately needed something stronger than wine. She’d stopped by one of the only two liquor stores in Vanzette and grabbed a bottle of tequila.

Before going inside, she went to the tool shed she was using to hold Willow and gave her a new dose of the sleeping serum she’d purchased. When Trina and Patrice first started giving Sade hell, she looked into all kinds of weapons and ways to keep people silent. She never thought she’d have to use any of it on Willow. Willow was awake but so drowsy she could barely hold her head up. The good thing about the serum was there were no adverse side effects. All it would do was make her sleep. As long as Sade kept food in her stomach, Willow would be okay.

Sade still hadn’t wrapped her mind around killing Willow, but she would if she had to. Patrice was an easy kill because of their history, but it was different with Willow. If Sade believed Willow wouldn’t tell the police or someone she trusted about Dante and being held captive, Sade would have let her go. At that point, the only two options were killing her and paying her to leave.

In the kitchen, Sade poured herself a double shot of tequila. Based on Imani’s words and reactions, she wasn’t the one responsible for trying to kill Dante. Now that Sade thought about it, it made sense for Imani to want him alive. Killing him would have meant killing her scapegoat. Imani didn’t want Dante dead—she wanted him in jail.

So, who had been watching him and ran him off the road?

Who wanted him not only dead but unable to be recognized and mourned?

Sade couldn’t think of a time Dante mentioned having any enemies, but honestly, Sade didn’t know everything about him. Dante did love to gamble, specifically poker. Did he owe someone money who was tired of waiting to collect?

Sighing, Sade leaned against the counter and nibbled her lip. It was the first time she’d looked into the living room. Dante was seated by the fireplace in nothing but his boxers, staring at her. She smiled. It didn’t matter how hot it got at night, Dante always kept the fireplace on.

“Hey, I didn’t see you over there,” Sade said.

“Yeah, I spoke, but you didn’t hear me. What’s on your mind, Smiley?”

Sade turned and chugged the tequila before taking slow steps in his direction. Instead of sitting next to him, she sat on his lap. He loved having her close. Physical touch was his love language; words of affirmation were hers.

“Nothing that I want to talk about just yet.
